Gene Standley - Columbus Symphony Orchestra

Birthplace: Pittsburgh, PA
Grew up: Pittsburgh, PA
Started playing: Age 7
Education: The Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, PA
Began with CSO: September 1990
Non-CSO Activities: Buying and selling LPs on EBAY!
Favorite music: Bebop jazz
In my iPod: I don't own one.
Outside ensembles or groups: First Community Church gigs with Ronald Jenkins
Main Teachers: Forrest Standley (my father) and Dale Clevenger (my father’s student)
When not rehearsing or performing on stage with the CSO, I spend my time…
getting up early, taking photos of LPs, listing LPs on Ebay, packing LPs, driving to the Post Office, searching for classical LPs.
If I had not become a professional musician, I may have become a… psychologist.
To unwind, I listen to… my kids.
In the car, I listen to… Satellite Radio.
My current ring tone is… 1960s AT&T.
The last book I read was… “Goldmine’s Guide To Vinyl Record LPs”
Most people would be surprised to learn that… I am very thrifty and buy things at flea markets & thrift stores.
The non-musical accomplishment that I am most proud of is… my family.
What is your guilty pleasure?  Driving my 2002 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG (Only 36K-It looks like a sedan and drives like a rocket ship).
My favorite vacation is… being in a warm place in the winter!
The last movie I saw was… Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2
To prepare for a performance, I… avoid caffeine, do a series of exercises & warm up slowly.
If I could choose to play another instrument, it would be the… timpani.
I also play the… Wagner Tuba-very similar to the horn.
My most embarrassing musical moment was… in grade school when I arrived for a concert, opened my horn case… it was empty.
An extremely positive musical experience I have had was… playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra during the 1980s under Riccardo Muti.
A profound experience, musical or otherwise, that has shaped or deeply influenced my approach to music would be… learning the wisdom of a steady, persistent quest to become a better musician and better person.
If I could spend a day with any composer, if would be… Igor Stravinsky
