Birthplace: San Antonio, Texas Grew
up: My father was in the army so I grew up all over the
world. Some of my favorites were Vicenza Italy and Olympia,
Washington Started playing: Trumpet in the 5th
grade. At the end of the year my band teacher suggested I “try something
harder” and switch to horn. Education: Bachelor’s of
Science in French Horn Performance with an Outside field in Business (Indiana
University). I also spent a year at Rice University in Houston, Texas
studying for my Master’s before winning my first job. Began with
CSO: Began in Fall 2007. (my second job) Right after a year
with the Charleston Symphony in South Carolina Favorite
music: ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING. My favorite music playlist currently
contains Radiohead, Andrew Bird, Counting Crows, Kings of Convenience, Bruckner,
Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Sibelius In my iPod: 50 GB of
popular music, 40 GB classical, 10 GB jazz Outside ensembles or
groups: New Albany Symphony Orchestra, occasionally substituting
with Cincinnati Symphony or Philadelphia Orchestra Main
Teachers: William VerMeulen (Rice University, Houston Symphony),
Michael Hatfield (Indiana University), Richard Seraphinoff (Indiana
University) When not rehearsing or performing on stage with the CSO,
I spend my time…Jogging, cycling, cooking, photography, computers,
hiking If I had not become a professional musician, I may have become
an…IT specialist, business associate, dentist To unwind, I
listen to…slow movements. There is something inexplicably
beautiful and calming about a slow movement that no other genre of music can
capture. In the car, I listen to…WOSU NPR
radio!! My current ring tone is…the theme from Peter
Gunn The last book I read was…Atlas Shrugged by Ayn
Rand. Currently reading Robinson Crusoe. Most people would be
surprised to learn that…I am an Eagle Scout. The craziest
thing I have ever done is…choosing music as a career. My
dream is…to play in one of the top 5 US orchestras. The
non-musical accomplishment that I am most proud of is…getting married
to the woman of my dreams. What is your guilty
pleasure? Wine and cookies. Not at the same
time. My favorite vacation is…our bi-yearly vacation to
Kiawah Island in South Carolina. Warm sun, a good book, and a cold
beer. Heaven. The last movie I saw
was…Twilight To prepare for a performance, I…play
long tones and scales over and over again while watching TV. Doing this
promotes good muscle memory (assuming I am least semi-conscious of what is
coming out of my bell while watching a football game) If I could
choose to play another instrument, it would be the… clarinet. The
fluidity of notes and softness that the clarinet can achieve takes my breath
away. I also play the…xbox 360. An extremely
positive musical experience I have had was…every time I play Mahler
Symphony#2. Absolutely breathtaking… A profound experience,
musical or otherwise, that has shaped or deeply influenced my approach to music
would be…fighting my way through to the final round of the Philadelphia
Orchestra Fourth Horn auditions. It made me aware of how far I’ve come
while at the same time reminding me how far I still have to go. If I
could spend a day with any composer, if would be…Mozart. That guy
was just too wacky. I have to see for
myself!! |
